On October 1, 2024, in the Temka settlement near his home, 28-year-old Giga Avaliani was physically assaulted by a 17-year-old minor. Severely beaten, Giga Avaliani was found unconscious around 11 p.m. by local children, who called emergency medical services. Giga Avaliani survived for 23 days and passed away on October 24 without regaining consciousness.
In October, several weeks after the attack, the family of the deceased teacher, Giga Avaliani, demanded the resignation of the Prosecutor General and stricter charges against the minors allegedly involved in the incident.
The family does not trust the Prosecutor’s Office and accuses it of conducting an ineffective investigation which, in their view, aims to protect the perpetrators rather than punish them. The family states that the crime is far more serious than its current legal classification and that more individuals were involved than those currently detained.
A few days ago, another protest was held outside the Office of the Prosecutor General of Georgia. Members of Giga Avaliani’s family gave the Prosecutor’s Office a deadline until January 17.
The chairperson of the party “For the People,” Dr. Anna Dolidze, was present at the protest and expressed her solidarity and support for the family. According to Dr. Anna Dolidze, the culture of violence and impunity in Georgia must come to an end.
